Chapecó accidental teenage shooting

Overview

A 13 or 14-year-old teenager was critically injured in the Efapi neighborhood of Chapecó, Santa Catarina, after a pistol discharged during a gathering. The youth, who believed the weapon was unloaded, was struck in the forehead by a round remaining in the chamber. Police recovered the pistol, a carbine, and munitions at the residence of the 52-year-old owner, who was taken to a police station. The incident was registered as an infraction analogous to attempted homicide and omission of caution in the custody of a firearm.

The teenager survived the injury and was subsequently discharged from the Hospital Regional do Oeste. His survival was attributed to the ‘Sangue Total’ (Total Blood) pre-hospital transfusion program, which allowed the SAMU Aeromédico team to perform a transfusion at the scene to control hemorrhagic shock before transport.
