Charter Communications completes $34.5 billion acquisition of Cox Communications

Charter Communications has finalized its $34.5 billion acquisition of Cox Communications and Liberty Broadband, establishing itself as a dominant U.S. broadband and cable provider. The merger expands the Spectrum brand footprint to 45 states, serving an estimated 37 to 38 million customers across approximately 70 million homes and businesses.

As part of the structural transition, the parent company will adopt the Cox Communications name within one year, though it will continue to market its consumer services under the Spectrum brand. Cox Enterprises will hold an approximately 26% stake in the combined entity. Alex Taylor, CEO of Cox Enterprises, will serve as Chairman of the board, while Chris Winfrey remains President and CEO.

To facilitate the transition, Charter is offering Cox internet subscribers one free year of Spectrum Mobile service. Spectrum plans to roll out its full suite of products, pricing, and packaging in former Cox markets starting in mid-September. The deal received final regulatory approval from the California Public Utilities Commission following earlier federal clearance.
