Charter Communications completes Cox and Liberty acquisition
Overview
Charter Communications has finalized its $34.5 billion acquisition of Cox Communications and Liberty Broadband Corporation, establishing itself as a dominant U.S. broadband and cable provider. Following regulatory approval from the California Public Utilities Commission, the all-stock transaction expands the Spectrum brand footprint to 45 states, reaching approximately 70 million homes and businesses and serving 37 to 38 million customers.
As part of the integration, Charter plans to roll out Spectrum branding, pricing, and product packages in former Cox markets beginning in mid-September. To incentivize new customers, the company is offering one free year of mobile service to Cox internet subscribers who do not currently possess a mobile plan. While Spectrum will remain the primary customer-facing brand, the parent company is expected to adopt the Cox Communications name within one year.
Leadership transitions include Charter President and CEO Chris Winfrey continuing to lead the combined entity, while Cox Enterprises CEO Alex Taylor will serve as Chairman. Cox Enterprises will retain approximately 26% of the combined company’s shares. This expanded scale is intended to allow Charter to compete more aggressively against national and global connectivity and entertainment providers.
