Chega party submits motion of censure against Montenegro government
The Chega party has submitted its first motion of censure against the XXV Constitutional Government led by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro. The motion centers on the decision to retain Luís Neves as Minister of Internal Administration, following controversies regarding his previous tenure as director of the Judiciary Police.
Prime Minister Montenegro has dismissed the motion as a ‘mere political game’ that does not focus on solving citizens' problems. Meanwhile, the Socialist Party (PS) has indicated it will vote against the motion, stating it does not wish to be the cause of a political crisis in Portugal. The Iniciativa Liberal party also announced it would vote against the censure to avoid further political instability.
In a related development, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, has called for an extraordinary conference of leaders to determine the date for the debate and vote. Additionally, Aguiar-Branco has requested that Chega reformulate its proposal for a parliamentary inquiry into Luís Neves, citing insufficient delimitation of the investigation's object and grounds, warning that the request could be rejected if not properly clarified.
