Chega threatens motion of censure in Portugal

The Chega party, led by André Ventura, has threatened to present a motion of censure against the Portuguese government on September 1. The ultimatum is directed at Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, demanding the dismissal of the Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neves.

Ventura cited a degradation of political institutions and ethical standards, specifically referencing controversies involving Neves and his previous role as director of the Judiciary Police. The party is calling for intervention from President António José Seguro to resolve the situation, which they describe as a “lamaçal” (quagmire) of suspicion and crime.

In response, the PSD (Social Democratic Party) has dismissed the threat, with spokesperson Sebastião Bugalho stating that the move is unlikely to weaken the government. Some political analysts suggest the motion may serve as a platform for political friction rather than a successful attempt to dissolve the government, noting that the Socialist Party's support for such a motion is considered minimal.
