Chelsea advances talks to sign Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor

Chelsea is in advanced negotiations to sign 18-year-old Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor. Reports indicate that personal terms have been agreed upon with the versatile player, who can operate as a left-back, centre-back, or midfielder.

The transfer fee is expected to be in the region of €40 million, though the final package may include performance-related add-ons. While Atalanta previously resisted offers from clubs like Brighton, they are now reportedly willing to sell if their valuation is met.

A potential development plan involves Ahanor joining a Premier League club on loan to gain further experience before officially joining Chelsea in June 2027. This move follows Chelsea's recent acquisition of another Atalanta player, Marco Palestra.

Ahanor, who is eligible for Nigeria but has recently received his Italian citizenship and an Italy U21 call-up, has emerged as one of Europe's most highly-rated young defensive talents after a breakout season in Serie A.

Sources

Multiple sources in Italy confirm that Chelsea have agreed to buy Honest Ahanor from Atalanta for a package worth around €48m, although he might not necessarily play for them this season. Fabrizio Romano, Sportitalia’s Alfredo Pedullà and Sky Sport Italia pundit Gianluca Di Marzio all confirm the two clubs shook hands today, and are only working on the final details of how bonuses are to be activated. The total sum including those add-ons is going to reach €48m for the 18-year-old talent, who received his senior Italy debut in June. A product of the Genoa youth academy, Ahanor had moved to Atalanta only last summer for €16m plus up to a further €6m in add-ons, and a five per cent sell-on fee. As is often the case for Atalanta, they managed to get the best value out of young players and turn over a massive profit. Between the fee and add-ons, it’s believed the total figure paid by Chelsea will reach €48m. Nonetheless, Tuttomercatoweb maintain that Ahanor won’t be wearing the Chelsea jersey this season, as the club seems inclined to loan him out first to get more regular playing time. This could be within the Premier League for a side like Brighton and Hove Albion. He is a central defender, but can also play at left-back or even in a more advanced role down the left wing. The teenager has only 28 Serie A appearances under his belt, nine in the Champions League, and four in the Coppa Italia. Ahanor becomes the second big Chelsea purchase from Atalanta this season after Marco Palestra. [football-italia.net]
