Chemical leak in Jalisco triggers atmospheric alert
A chemical leak involving nitric acid triggered an atmospheric alert in the Jalisco municipalities of Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos and Tlajomulco de Zúñiga. The incident occurred on the Guadalajara-Chapala highway when a three-ton dry box truck carrying hazardous materials experienced a leak.
The vehicle was transporting four containers of nitric acid, one of which leaked, along with four containers of sulfuric acid and an additional sack of nitric acid. Emergency services, including the Secretariat of Environment and Territorial Development (Semadet), responded to the scene. The atmospheric alert was activated around 10:30 hours, specifically affecting areas near the Prologis Arrayanes and San Jorge industrial parks, as well as the La Puerta del Muerto neighborhood.
Authorities have since moved the truck to a secure, unpopulated area and conducted sanitation work at the original site to mitigate risks. The Guadalajara-Chapala highway has been reopened to traffic. No injuries have been reported, and emergency personnel continue to monitor the situation to ensure complete control of the substances.
