Chennai and surrounding districts hit by heavy rain and thunderstorms

The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy‑rain warning for 13 districts in Tamil Nadu, including the Chennai region. Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is expected, accompanied by gusty winds of 40‑50 km/h and gusts up to 60 km/h. Temperatures in Chennai are forecast to reach 37‑38 °C with high humidity, while isolated parts of the city may see brief showers.

Fishermen have been advised to avoid the coastal waters of Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar and the adjacent Bay of Bengal areas until the warning period ends on June 21, due to the expected rough sea conditions. Residents are urged to stay cautious during periods of intense rainfall and lightning.
