Chennai fishermen protest proposed Tamil Nadu Secretariat

Fishermen and residents in Pattinapakkam, Chennai, staged protests on Tuesday against the Tamil Nadu government's plan to construct a new Secretariat complex in the coastal area. The project, announced by Chief Minister Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, is estimated to cost Rs. 1,200 crore.

Protesters expressed concerns that the construction would destroy traditional livelihoods and displace fishing communities that have inhabited the area for generations. Local fishing groups have demanded the revocation of the Government Order and requested that the proposed site be declared a traditional residential area for the fishing community. Some representatives have suggested that instead of the Secretariat, the government should use the 25 acres of proposed land to build housing for fishermen.

The demonstration drew a large police presence to maintain security. Opposition from various political parties, including the DMK, AIADMK, and Left parties, has also been reported. Fishing village panchayats have warned of intensified, large-scale statewide protests if their demands are not met.
