Overview
The Tamil Nadu government has proposed a Rs 1,200 crore Secretariat complex on a 25.55-acre plot in Pattinapakkam. The plan has faced immediate pushback from local fishing communities and environmental activists. Political opposition has intensified as the AIADMK and CPI joined the criticism. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami questioned the necessity of the project given the state’s financial difficulties and warned that the Santhome Road location would exacerbate traffic congestion in residential and school zones. Simultaneously, the CPI announced plans for protests to protect fishing livelihoods, while the CPI (Marxist) called for an all-party meeting to address the controversy.
