Chennai Metro Rail Limited expands senior staff and orders new six‑coach trains
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) announced a recruitment drive for nine senior‑level positions, including a general manager (operations), deputy general managers for rolling stock and automatic fare collection, and several contract/deputation posts. Applicants must hold relevant engineering, architecture or finance qualifications and meet age limits of 38‑55 years. The deadline for online applications is 20 July.
In a separate development, CMRL plans to procure 28 new six‑coach trains to increase capacity on its Phase I and Phase I Extension corridors. Tenders for the trains have been floated, with bids to be opened next month and delivery expected within about two years. A Project Management Consultant, likely the Egis India‑Nippon Koei joint venture, will oversee procurement and the required station upgrades to accommodate the longer trains.
Both initiatives aim to improve service efficiency and accommodate growing passenger demand on Chennai’s metro network, which currently carries roughly 320,000 riders daily.
