India railway and infrastructure recruitment drives

Overview

India’s rail-related and infrastructure sectors continued an extensive recruitment drive through August 2026. In early July, the North Central Railway (NCR) opened 1,853 Act Apprentice positions, while Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) began recruiting for various senior managerial posts.

By mid-July, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) announced over 200 openings, including 175 junior engineer and technical roles. In late July, the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) announced 4,098 vacancies for Junior Engineers, Depot Material Superintendents, and Chemical & Metallurgical Assistants.

In August, the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) issued a notification for 134 apprentice trainee positions. Concurrently, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) sought an Assistant Manager in Civil Engineering, and the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) announced vacancies for Manager, Junior Manager, and Executive roles in Noida.

On August 14, the RRB launched online applications for 3,993 vacancies for Junior Engineer (JE) and Depot Material Superintendent (DMS) positions under Centralized Employment Notice (CEN) 04/2026. The application window closes on September 13, 2026, with a fee payment deadline of September 15. The selection process involves two computer-based tests, document verification, and medical examinations.

By early September, Southern Railway released notifications for 6,171 apprentice roles and 3,993 Junior Engineer vacancies. The apprentice roles, offering a ₹9,600 monthly stipend, have faced criticism regarding the removal of state employment exchange registration requirements and the impact of interstate eligibility on local employment opportunities.

Looking ahead, the RRB is preparing for a massive drive for approximately 30,000 Group D (Level-1) posts, with official notification expected between September and October 2026.
