Chennai officials accelerate monsoon readiness and road repairs

Tamil Nadu Transport Minister Tamilan Parthiban has reviewed monsoon readiness in Chennai's Alandur and Adyar zones ahead of the Northeast Monsoon. The Minister directed officials to complete stormwater drain works by the end of September and ensure that waterbodies, canals, and silt-trapping chambers are desilted and cleared of water hyacinth to facilitate rainwater flow.

To mitigate waterlogging, officials were instructed to prepare motor pumps for low-lying areas and ensure basic amenities and food stocks are available at identified relief camps. The state has appointed zonal monitoring officers to oversee these precautionary measures across Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) zones.

In Velachery, residents have raised concerns regarding deep potholes on major stretches, such as the 100-feet road near the Vijayanagar bus stand, warning that road conditions could worsen during the upcoming rains. The GCC has recently allocated Rs 22 crore for city-wide road restoration and repair works, with officials stating that tenders for identified patchwork areas are being processed.
