Chennai police arrest seven for illegal sale of newborn baby

Chennai police have dismantled an illegal adoption racket, arresting seven individuals including a newborn's biological mother, a childless couple from Andhra Pradesh, and medical professionals.

The scheme involved the sale of a two-day-old baby girl for a sum reported to be between Rs 4 lakh and Rs 9 lakh. The biological mother, Pavithra, allegedly entered into a verbal agreement with the buyers, Selvarasi and Gnanasekaran, to provide the child due to financial difficulties.

To facilitate the transaction, hospital administrator Visalakshmi and doctor Rajasekaran allegedly falsified medical records at a private hospital in Villivakkam to list the buyers as the biological parents. Intermediaries, including a neighbor and a nurse, were also arrested for their roles in arranging the deal. The infant has been rescued and placed in the custody of a child welfare committee.
