Newborn death investigation in Sheffield

Overview

South Yorkshire Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a newborn baby girl in the Wincobank area of Sheffield. Officers were called to a residence on Holywell Heights just before 6:00 am on Sunday, August 30, 2026, after receiving reports regarding the welfare of an infant.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the newborn girl, but despite resuscitation efforts by police and paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy later confirmed the infant died from stab wounds. Forensic examinations revealed the baby girl suffered 33 injuries resulting from 15 stab wounds.

As of September 2, 2026, five individuals, identified as Slovakian nationals, have been charged in connection with the death. The charges include murder, causing or allowing the death of a child, and perverting the course of justice. The charged adults are Andrea Skopova (20), Peter Horvath (19), Nina Horvathova (37), and Peter Horvath (38). A 15-year-old girl has also been charged with perverting the course of justice for allegedly taking steps to conceal the killing. All five have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to appear at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court.

Two additional women, aged 26 and 37, were arrested on suspicion of murder but have since been released on bail. South Yorkshire Police have requested that the public avoid speculating online to protect the integrity of the investigation. Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward described the incident as a ‘tragic’ and ‘traumatic’ event that has deeply impacted the local community.
