Chennai to install panic buttons in new bus shelters

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is developing six new stainless-steel bus shelters in the Perambur constituency to enhance women's safety. Located under the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Transformation Mission (CMIUTM), the project is being implemented at a cost of Rs 1.20 crore.

These shelters, situated at various locations including Erukkenchery High Road, KKD Nagar, and MKB Nagar, will feature emergency panic buttons. When activated, the button will trigger continuous CCTV recording for 15 minutes. The footage will be transmitted to the Greater Chennai Police headquarters and the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC).

In addition to safety features, the shelters will be equipped with improved lighting, Wi-Fi connectivity, and mobile charging points.
