Chennai urban safety and infrastructure development

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is implementing various safety and infrastructure initiatives under the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Transformation Mission (CMIUTM/CMIUDM).

Initial efforts focused on enhancing women’s safety through the installation of six stainless-steel bus shelters in the Perambur constituency. These shelters are equipped with emergency panic buttons that trigger 15 minutes of continuous CCTV recording, with footage transmitted to the Greater Chennai Police headquarters and the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC). The shelters also feature improved lighting, Wi-Fi, and mobile charging points.

Following these safety measures, the GCC launched a ‘Safe Route to Schools’ pilot programme to improve pedestrian safety for children in Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Washermenpet, and KK Nagar. This initiative involves creating child-friendly street networks using traffic-calming tools, continuous footpaths, protected crossings, and enhanced lighting.

Broader urban planning efforts by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) include a Third Master Plan that proposes decentralised development and the creation of six satellite towns to manage rising population and housing demands.
