Chery unveils ultra-fast Volt-Dragon charging system
Chinese automaker Chery has announced a new 1,440 kW charging system called Volt-Dragon, which it claims can provide 500 kilometers of range in just five minutes. During a demonstration in Wuhu, the system charged a battery from 10 to 97 percent in 6 minutes and 50 seconds.
The technology utilizes silicon carbide electronics, liquid cooling, and an AI-driven management system named CheryMind to regulate temperature and prevent battery damage. The system also features 96.5 percent efficiency, two-way charging capabilities, and robotic arms for automated plug insertion.
While the demonstration sets a high benchmark, Chery has not specified the exact vehicle or battery capacity used, and current electric vehicles are not yet capable of utilizing the full 1,440 kW output. Chery plans to deploy the first 100 charging stations across ten Chinese cities, with a long-term goal of establishing 20,000 stations globally by 2029.
