General Motors unveils new 8.3L V8 diesel for 2027 heavy-duty pickups
General Motors has unveiled a new 8.3-liter V8 turbo-diesel engine, codenamed ‘Mungos’, set to debut in the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD models. This new powerplant replaces the existing 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine.
The new engine delivers significant performance increases, producing between 555 and 563 horsepower and approximately 1,668 Nm of torque. This represents a substantial jump from the previous 6.6-liter engine, which produced 470 HP and 1,322 Nm. The engine features a compact graphite cast iron block, forged steel pistons, a variable geometry turbocharger, and a dual-stage water-to-air charge air cooling system.
Designed for heavy-duty tasks, the 2027 models will be paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. The enhanced towing capacity is expected to reach up to 17,270 kg (approximately 17.2 tonnes) with gooseneck hitches. In the United States, the Silverado HD lineup will include several trim levels, ranging from the Work Truck (WT) starting at $38,600 to the premium High Country model priced at $71,700.
