General Motors engine development and diesel expansion

Overview

General Motors has announced significant updates to its internal combustion engine lineup, specifically targeting the pickup truck market. Initially, the company unveiled a sixth-generation small-block V8 engine family for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. This lineup includes a 5.7-liter L76 and a 6.6-liter L78, the latter being described as the “most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in its class.” GM is also emphasizing diesel efficiency, highlighting a 3.0-liter diesel engine capable of highway ranges exceeding 900 miles.

Following these announcements, GM expanded its diesel offerings with the introduction of the 8.3-liter V8 turbodiesel engine, nicknamed the ‘Mongoose’ or ‘Mungos’. This engine is intended for the heavy-duty segment, specifically the Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, and serves as a larger replacement for previous 6.6-liter models to compete with heavy-duty diesel competitors. The ‘Mongoose’ is viewed as a direct competitive response to Ford’s ‘Scorpion’ engine.

Technical specifications for the 8.3-liter Duramax V8 indicate it is expected to deliver between 555 and 563 horsepower and approximately 1,668 to 1,700 Nm of torque when paired with a ten-speed Allison automatic transmission. Engineering upgrades include a graphite cast iron block, forged crankshafts, connecting rods, steel pistons, and an improved two-stage water-to-air cooling system. These enhancements aim to increase towing capacities, with potential ranges reaching up to 17,270 kg (approximately 17.2 tonnes) with a gooseneck hitch. In the United States, the 2027 Silverado HD lineup will feature various trim levels, ranging from the Work Truck (WT) starting at $38,600 to the premium High Country model priced at $71,700.
