Argentina energy sector sees major investments from Chevron and Compañía Mega

Argentina's energy sector is seeing significant investment activity, particularly within the Vaca Muerta formation and the Santa Cruz province.

Chevron has announced a US$ 13.8 billion investment plan for its El Trapial area in northern Neuquén. Utilizing the Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI), the company aims to triple its production of oil and gas by 2035. The El Trapial block, which covers approximately 450 square kilometers, currently produces about 40,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

In another major development, Compañía Mega—a joint venture between YPF, Petrobras, and Dow—has received approval to expand its natural gas separation and fractionation infrastructure. This US$ 360 million project, scheduled for execution between 2026 and 2028, is expected to increase gas processing capacity from Vaca Muerta by 27%, adding roughly 1,500 tons of daily production.

In Santa Cruz, the provincial government and Alianza Petrolera Argentina S.A. have reached an agreement to reactivate the La Mariposa and Sur Río Deseado Este oil fields. The project includes the introduction of multilateral drilling technology, which will be implemented using Canadian technical expertise and is expected to create over 90 direct and indirect jobs.
