Amravati hospital NICU fire kills three newborns
Two separate hospital fires in India's NICU units have resulted in infant fatalities and injuries.
In Amravati, Maharashtra, a fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the District Women's Hospital around 3:30 AM on Monday. Preliminary reports indicate the blaze was triggered by an explosion in a ventilator. Of the 39 newborns being treated in the unit at the time, three died due to burns or smoke inhalation. Hospital staff successfully evacuated 36 other infants, six of whom were transferred to a super-specialty hospital for continued care. An internal inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause and safety protocols.
In a separate incident in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, a fire occurred in the NICU of the Chhindwara District Hospital during the early hours of a Friday/Saturday. The fire was reportedly caused by a spark in the filament of a radiant warmer machine. Three newborns sustained serious burn injuries, and one infant subsequently died during treatment. The remaining two infants were transferred to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College in Jabalpur for advanced surgical care.
