Chiapas highway collision kills firefighter and others

A multi-vehicle collision occurred on the Tuxtla Gutiérrez–San Cristóbal de las Casas highway in Chiapas, Mexico, resulting in at least two deaths and numerous injuries. The incident took place near kilometer 41 of the toll road.

The tragedy unfolded when a cement-laden trailer, reportedly suffering from brake failure, lost control while navigating a curve. The heavy vehicle struck several vehicles that were already stopped at the scene due to a previous accident involving a public transport unit. Among the vehicles hit were an ambulance and emergency response units.

One of the fatalities has been identified as Javier Trejo, a firefighter from the San Cristóbal de las Casas Fire Department, who was providing aid at the scene when the trailer struck. Reports indicate between 10 and 14 people were injured, with several in serious condition. Emergency teams from the Red Cross, Civil Protection, and the National Guard responded to the scene to manage the wreckage and fuel spills. The highway was temporarily closed to traffic in both directions while recovery operations continued.
