Chiapas highway multi-vehicle collision

Overview

A multi-vehicle collision occurred on the highway between Tuxtla Gutiérrez and San Cristóbal de las Casas in Chiapas, Mexico. The incident took place near kilometer 41 of the toll road.

Initial reports indicated that a cement-laden trailer suffered brake failure while navigating a curve, striking vehicles already stopped due to a previous accident involving a public transport unit. Subsequent details identified the vehicle as a Coca-Cola delivery trailer traveling at high speed, which collided with a cargo truck before striking several other units, damaging a total of eight vehicles.

The collision resulted in two deaths and 14 injuries, with four individuals reported to be in serious condition. Among the deceased was Javier Trejo, a firefighter from the San Cristóbal de las Casas Fire Department, who was providing aid at the scene when the impact occurred. Local motorists suggested that a lack of proper signage at the site of the initial accident may have contributed to the pile-up.
