Chiapas, Mexico, experiences magnitude 4.4 earthquake

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake occurred in the early hours of Sunday, August 23, 2026, off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico. According to the Servicio Sismológico Nacional (SSN), the tremor was recorded at 04:02:54 local time.

The epicenter was located 88 kilometers southwest of Mapastepec, Chiapas, at a depth of 7 kilometers. Due to its shallow depth, the movement may have been felt with greater intensity in nearby localities. As of the latest reports, no structural damage or injuries have been reported.

Seismic activity is frequent in Chiapas due to the convergence of tectonic plates in the Pacific coastal zone. Authorities continue to monitor the region to assess any risks to infrastructure or the population.
