Chiayi health authorities expand dementia prevention initiatives
Health authorities in Chiayi, Taiwan, are intensifying efforts to combat dementia as the region enters a super-aged society. In Minxiong Township, the local health center has launched a community initiative involving the creation of handmade keychains. These keychains feature the names and contact information of elderly residents to serve as practical tools for preventing wandering and ensuring safe returns home.
Simultaneously, the Chiayi City Government Health Bureau, in collaboration with Chiayi Christian Hospital, hosted a large-scale seminar on brain health. Attended by over 300 citizens, the event featured Dr. Tseng Wen-yi, who discussed the importance of identifying Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and utilizing lifestyle interventions—such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and social engagement—to delay cognitive decline.
Local health departments are working to build comprehensive support networks, including dementia-friendly communities, specialized care centers, and training for community volunteers to provide early identification and long-term care support.
