Chicago Cubs activate Edward Cabrera from injured list

The Chicago Cubs have activated right-hander Edward Cabrera from the 15-day injured list. In a corresponding move, the team placed Trent Thornton on the 15-day IL due to left ankle soreness.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed that Cabrera will transition to a relief role for the remainder of the season and the postseason. This move follows a season marked by health issues for Cabrera, including a hamstring strain and finger blisters, which limited his availability. During his 15 starts this season, Cabrera posted a 5.68 ERA over 76 innings.

The shift to the bullpen is intended to provide much-needed depth to a pitching staff that has struggled with injuries. While Cabrera was originally acquired to be a starter, the team aims to utilize his velocity in relief to support their postseason push.
