Chicago Cubs claim infielder Gabriel Arias to bolster depth

The Chicago Cubs have claimed 26-year-old infielder Gabriel Arias off waivers from the New York Mets. The move is intended to bolster the team's infield depth following an oblique strain suffered by Dansby Swanson, who is expected to be sidelined for at least a month.

Arias provides significant defensive versatility, having experience at first, second, third, and shortstop, as well as some time in the outfield. While his offensive production has been modest, with a .235 batting average and a .645 OPS in 44 games this season, his defensive metrics are notable. He has recorded a +3 Fielding Run Value this season and has demonstrated a strong arm and high Outs Above Average at shortstop.

To make room for Arias on the 40-man roster, the Cubs transferred right-hander Phil Maton to the 60-day injured list. The addition allows the Cubs more flexibility as they manage injuries to other players, including Matt Shaw, who is currently on a minor league rehab assignment.
