Chicago Cubs release reliever Hoby Milner

The Chicago Cubs have released veteran left-handed reliever Hoby Milner. The move follows the pitcher being placed on waivers and subsequently designated for assignment after he went unclaimed by other teams.

Milner, 35, signed a one-year, $3.75 million deal with the Cubs during the winter. While the Cubs remain responsible for his remaining salary, any new team he signs with will only owe him the prorated league minimum.

Milner’s season was interrupted in late June by an appendectomy, leading to a rehab assignment in late July. Before his injury, he had served in high-leverage roles, recording six holds and two saves. Despite a 3.53 ERA this season, his performance was noted for a low strikeout rate and reliance on balls in play. The decision to release him comes as the Cubs' bullpen has been reinforced by the return of Daniel Palencia and acquisitions such as Aaron Civale and Ryan Zeferjahn.
