Chicago Cubs shut down pitcher Shelby Miller for remainder of season
The Chicago Cubs have announced they are shutting down right-handed pitcher Shelby Miller for the remainder of the season. Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed the decision at Wrigley Field, stating that the risk of continuing Miller's rehabilitation outweighs the potential reward.
Miller, who is nearing his 36th birthday, was attempting a comeback following his second Tommy John surgery. While his progress in September had placed him in consideration for a potential promotion from Triple-A Iowa to bolster the bullpen for a playoff run, the club decided to prioritize his long-term health. Counsell noted that Miller has completed a successful month of healthy activity and will be ready for spring training next season.
