Chicago Cubs sign veteran catcher Austin Wynns
The Chicago Cubs have signed veteran catcher Austin Wynns to a minor league contract. The 35-year-old will be assigned to Triple-A Iowa to provide organizational depth at the position.
Wynns, who has eight seasons of Major League experience, joins the Cubs after appearing with the Oakland Athletics, Atlanta Braves, and Texas Rangers during the 2026 season. The move addresses a lack of experienced catching depth on the Cubs' 40-man roster, which currently relies on Carson Kelly and Miguel Amaya.
With MLB rosters set to expand next week, Wynns provides a veteran option should injuries occur to the primary catchers or if the team seeks additional depth for the postseason stretch. Because he signed before the end of August, he remains eligible for postseason play.
