Chicago officials raised concerns about South Chicago Chapel before bodies found

Records reveal that a Chicago alderperson’s office raised concerns about the South Chicago Chapel nearly a year before 56 decomposing bodies were discovered at the facility. In September 2024, the office of Alderman Peter Chico filed two complaints within a single week regarding resident reports of odors emanating from the business. The second complaint specifically noted that the owners, Clark and Johanna Morgan, had a history of mishandling human remains.

Despite these warnings, a city inspector visited the site two days after the initial complaint but dismissed the issue after being told the smell originated from a burning garbage can outside. The inspector’s report indicated no attempt to enter the building.

Prior to the discovery, Alderman Chico had stated that previous complaints were limited to alleged “gang funerals.” However, new documents show the city was alerted to odor issues and the owners' history. The Morgans previously operated Heights Crematory in Chicago Heights, which was shut down last year after officials found 100 improperly stored bodies on the premises.
