Chicago funeral home storage investigations

Overview

Authorities in Chicago are investigating multiple facilities following the discovery of improperly stored human remains.

At South Chicago Chapel, investigators found between 50 and 57 decomposing bodies and more than 50 sets of cremated remains kept in unrefrigerated areas with rodent and maggot infestations. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation suspended the license of the chapel's owner, Johanna Morgan. Records show her husband, Clark X. Morgan, had his license revoked in 2024 for unprofessional conduct and practicing with an expired license. The couple previously operated Heights Crematory, which was shut down after officials found 100 improperly stored bodies.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has taken jurisdiction over the remains to identify the decedents and is offering to handle cremations at no cost for families. Recent findings reveal that Alderman Peter Chico’s office had filed complaints regarding odors from the chapel as early as September 2024. Despite these reports, a city inspector reportedly dismissed the issue after being told the smell came from a burning garbage can, without attempting to enter the building.

Following the facility’s shutdown, families held a vigil to demand transparency and criminal charges. Grieving relatives expressed frustration over the condition of their loved ones' remains, with some reporting they received ashes that they believe are not human, describing the contents as appearing like ‘a pile of dirt and rocks.’ Advocates are calling on city and state officials to pursue criminal prosecution.

Parallel investigations involve the Bohemian National Cemetery and Crematorium on Chicago's North Side. Following a July 23 visit, the Illinois Comptroller’s office reported equipment issues and remains not stored at required temperatures, leading to an order to halt the intake of new remains while the investigation continues.
