Chiclayo: Rain floods Mercado Modelo stalls
Light rainfall in the early hours of Tuesday caused flooding in the Callanca sector of the Mercado Modelo in Chiclayo, Lambayeque. Approximately 100 merchants selling groceries, meats, and vegetables were affected by water accumulation in their stalls.
Due to the lack of an adequate drainage system, vendors were forced to manually remove water using buckets and shovels. To protect their goods, some merchants elevated products, installed plastic coverings, or replaced old roofing with fiber cement sheets. However, these measures have proven insufficient to prevent leaks and flooding.
The flooding has also hindered customer movement through the aisles, leading to reduced sales. Merchants report that this is a recurring issue and have called on authorities to implement effective drainage solutions or provide motor pumps. While a pluvial drainage project for Chiclayo exists, it remains in the project stage without recorded progress in execution.
