Market flooding incidents in Latin America

Overview

Recent flooding events have impacted commercial markets in Chile and Peru, causing significant damage to vendors and merchandise.

In Lota Bajo, Chile, heavy rains and a sewage system collapse flooded more than 80% of the Feria de Lota Bajo stalls. The contamination forced merchants to discard at least two tons of goods, including clothing and food items. While the market has since been authorized to reopen after vendors sanitized their workspaces, the event caused substantial financial losses.

In Chiclayo, Peru, light rainfall led to flooding in the Callanca sector of the Mercado Modelo. Due to inadequate drainage, approximately 100 merchants selling groceries, meats, and vegetables were forced to manually remove water. Vendors have attempted to protect goods using plastic coverings and elevated platforms, but they report that these measures are insufficient. Merchants have called for effective drainage solutions or motor pumps, noting that a planned pluvial drainage project for the area has seen no recorded progress in execution.
