Chico Buarque reports death threat to Rio de Janeiro police
Brazilian singer and composer Chico Buarque, 82, has reported a death threat to the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police. The threat was posted as a comment on a news article by Folha de S. Paulo regarding the artist's political support for candidates linked to the Landless Workers' Movement (MST).
The comment, which stated the author “would love to shorten the life” of the composer, was removed by the newspaper for violating participation rules. Legal counsel for Buarque, including Maíra Fernandes and João Vicente Tinoco, has requested a formal investigation by the Cybercrime Repression Police Department (DRCI) to identify and hold the perpetrator accountable.
Preliminary investigations by the legal team have identified the suspect as a physician registered with the Regional Medical Council of Minas Gerais (CRM-MG). The defense has indicated they intend to report the individual to the medical council once his identity and professional status are officially confirmed by authorities. The lawyers noted that Buarque has frequently been the target of online attacks due to his political stances.
