Death threat against Chico Buarque

Overview

Brazilian singer and composer Chico Buarque, 82, reported a death threat to the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police after a comment was posted on a news article by Folha de S. Paulo. The comment, which followed an article regarding Buarque’s political support for candidates linked to the Landless Workers' Movement (MST), stated the author “would love to shorten the life” of the composer.

Buarque’s legal team, including Maíra Fernandes and João Vicente Tinoco, requested a formal investigation by the Cybercrime Repression Police Department (DRCI). Preliminary investigations by the defense identified the suspect as a physician registered with the Regional Medical Council of Minas Gerais (CRM-MG).

The DRCI has initiated an investigation to identify the individual behind the profile and determine criminal responsibility. The defense noted that while freedom of expression allows for criticism, the comment crossed into a direct threat based on the artist's political positions.
