Chieti authorities consider evacuation of 80 residents due to landslide risk

Authorities in Chieti are preparing for the potential evacuation of approximately 80 residents living in 50 housing units due to hydrogeological instability in the Santa Maria district. A multidisciplinary technical evaluation group, including representatives from the Municipality of Chieti, the Special Office for the Reconstruction of Abruzzo, the Chieti Civil Engineering office, and the Università d’Annunzio, has submitted reports following inspections of four specific residential buildings: Don Minzoni, Bel View, La Pinetina, and Panorama.

The technical findings highlight critical structural vulnerabilities. Specifically, the Don Minzoni condominium has been identified as severely compromised by landslide movement and inadequate foundations, resulting in serious structural deformations and lesions that fail to meet minimum safety standards. The reports recommend evacuation for these sites.

Mayor Giovanni Legnini stated that the administration will act based on technical evaluations and the principles of precaution and prevention. Before final measures are implemented, the municipality has scheduled a period of consultation with residents, property owners, and condominium administrators. Residents have until October 12 to present technical counter-assessments or expert opinions. The local government has pledged transparency and assistance to the affected families during this process.
