Chihuahua faces severe damage from heavy rains and Hurricane Polo
Heavy rainfall and the influence of Hurricane Polo have caused significant damage across Chihuahua, particularly in Ciudad Juárez. The State Civil Protection Coordination (CEPC) has reported 261 weather-related incidents in the state, with 248 of those occurring in Ciudad Juárez.
In Ciudad Juárez, the Municipal Water and Sanitation Board (JMAS) has recorded 16 sinkholes and 225 reports regarding sewage and drainage issues. A major landslide in the Águilas de Zaragoza neighborhood destroyed a 125-meter stretch of road, while a large sinkhole in the same area measured 5 meters deep and 8 meters wide, leading to the evacuation of several families.
In other regions, such as Ejido Benito Juárez, intense hail caused injuries to two people and damaged vehicles and crops. Authorities have activated temporary shelters in Ciudad Juárez, including the Riveras del Bravo Community Center and the Olivia Espinoza shelter.
Mayor Héctor Rafael Ortiz Orpinel stated that municipal machinery is insufficient to address the damage, prompting a formal request for a state of emergency. While a brief pause in rain is expected over the weekend, officials warn that moisture from Hurricane Polo could bring more heavy precipitation through Tuesday.
