Chihuahua celebrates 317 years of foundation and FICUU 2026

The city of Chihuahua is celebrating its 317th anniversary, marking its foundation on October 12, 1709. Originally named Real de Minas de San Francisco de Cuéllar, the settlement was established following a tie-breaking vote by Governor Antonio de Deza y Ulloa, who chose the valley at the confluence of the Chuvíscar and Sacramento rivers due to its water availability.

Commemorative activities include civic ceremonies, honors to the flag, and the maintenance of historical monuments in the Plaza de Armas, such as the monument to Antonio de Deza y Ulloa. During the celebrations, Santiago de la Peña, Secretary General of Government, emphasized the importance of federalism and municipal autonomy.

The festivities conclude with the closing of the 2026 Chihuahua City International Festival (FICUU), featuring a free concert by Alejandro Fernández at the Plaza del Ángel. Local authorities have implemented security measures and checkpoints to manage the expected crowds for the musical event.
