Chihuahua faces suicide crisis with rates double national average

Chihuahua is facing a significant mental health crisis, with suicide rates in the state reaching 13.7 per 100,000 inhabitants, more than double the national average of 6.7. Data from INEGI indicates that the youth population, specifically those aged 15 to 29, is the most heavily affected group.

The Commission for Solidarity and Defense of Human Rights (Cosyddhac) has called on the state government to implement more effective psychosocial prevention programs. The organization criticized the allocation of state funds toward other projects, suggesting resources should be redirected toward addressing suicide and addiction prevention.

In response to the crisis, the Municipal Institute for Prevention and Attention to Health (IMPAS) has launched a campaign to promote a dedicated *800 helpline for those experiencing depression or emotional emergencies. The initiative aims to provide psychological guidance and support to individuals and their families.

Psychologists from IMPAS emphasize the importance of recognizing warning signs, which can include sudden mood changes, irritability, social isolation, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, and unusual farewells or the gifting of prized possessions. While these behaviors do not guarantee an attempt, they serve as critical indicators for seeking professional intervention.
