Crime and violence trends in Chihuahua

Crime statistics in Chihuahua reveal significant challenges regarding violent crime and public safety. Data from the Network for the Rights of Children in Mexico (Redim) indicates that Chihuahua is the sixth most lethal state in Mexico for the homicide of children and adolescents, recording 59 such deaths. In this demographic, 79.66% of victims were adolescents aged 15 to 17.

Further reports highlight high rates of violence against women, with the state ranking seventh nationally in absolute femicide numbers and sixth by rate. Officials have described these figures as “shameful” and “overwhelming,” noting that violence affects women of all ages.

In the correctional system, data shows that 15 inmates attempted or completed suicide over a 31-month period, resulting in three deaths. In response, the Chihuahuan Institute of Mental Health (Ichisam) has launched a program in facilities across Chihuahua, Cuauhtémoc, and Parral to train staff in identifying risk factors and providing psychological support.

Conversely, some crime categories have seen improvements; vehicle and motorcycle thefts decreased by 26% through July compared to the previous year, with the majority of these incidents reported as non-violent.
