Chihuahua government coordinates response to internal forced displacement
The Chihuahua state government, through the General Secretariat of Government, held the second ordinary session of the State Commission for Internal Forced Displacement. The meeting focused on strengthening coordination between state agencies, civil society, and international organizations to support displaced populations.
Key initiatives discussed include developing pathways to facilitate educational access for children and adolescents, as well as improving labor market integration for displaced individuals. Representatives from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) participated in the session.
The IOM presented an exploratory study on institutional capacity to respond to internal displacement in Mexico, covering regions such as Oaxaca, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Baja California, and Mexico City. The study highlighted Chihuahua’s progress in inter-agency coordination, the establishment of the displacement commission, and the classification of forced displacement as a crime under the state’s Penal Code.
