Chihuahua honors Sierra Tarahumara artisans at regional art contest

The Chihuahua State Government, through the Fideicomiso de Fomento de las Actividades Artesanales del Estado de Chihuahua (Fodarch), held the 32nd Regional Popular Art Contest of the Sierra Tarahumara in Guachochi. The event, hosted at the Andrés Balleza Carreón Cultural Center, recognized the creativity of artisans from the mountain region.

The competition featured works across 11 categories and 23 subcategories, including vegetable fibers, musical instruments, traditional clothing, textiles, pottery, wood, leather, jewelry, toys, lapidary, and stonework. A total of 70 prizes were awarded from a 375,000 peso fund, which was provided equally by Fodarch and the Fondo Nacional para el Fomento de las Artesanías (Fonart). The highest honor, the Excellence Award, was granted at 18,500 pesos.

In addition to celebrating craftsmanship, the contest aims to preserve traditional techniques and knowledge while promoting the works of the Sierra Tarahumara to broader audiences. The event included participation from state and municipal authorities, community representatives, and the Diocese of the Tarahumara.
