Indigenous economic and cultural support in Chihuahua

Overview

The state of Chihuahua has implemented several initiatives to support indigenous communities and artisans, particularly in the Sierra Tarahumara region.

In mid-August 2026, the Secretariat of Indigenous Peoples and Communities (SPyCI) distributed 1.425 million pesos through the 2026 Economic Development Program for the Indigenous Population. This program provided 25,000 pesos to 57 beneficiaries across 67 municipalities to foster self-employment in sectors such as textiles, gastronomy, and carpentry. Enrique Rascón Carrillo, head of the secretariat, noted that the funds are intended to “provide opportunities rather than mere handouts” by supporting existing community knowledge.

Following this, the Chihuahua State Government, via Fodarch, hosted the 32nd Regional Popular Art Contest of the Sierra Tarahumara in Guachochi. Supported by a 375,000 peso fund from Fodarch and Fonart, the contest awarded 70 prizes across 11 categories, including pottery, wood, and traditional clothing. The event aimed to preserve traditional techniques and promote regional craftsmanship to wider audiences.
