Chihuahua launches urban development and heritage protection program
The Municipal Institute of Integral Planning (IMPLAN) has introduced a new Sectoral Program for Urban Equipment, Public Space, and Urban Development in Chihuahua. The initiative aims to guide city growth and address infrastructure and service gaps in underserved areas. Projections toward 2040 indicate that Chihuahua will require approximately 145 new urban equipment elements, with 161 municipal, state, and federal properties identified as potential sites.
The program also focuses on public space and environmental preservation, proposing 16 metropolitan and regional projects and identifying over 300 hectares of land for reforestation. A significant component of the plan is the protection of historical and architectural heritage. A diagnostic study of over 36,000 properties revealed that 26.2 percent possess historical, contextual, or adjacency value.
Alejandra Enríquez, the Secretary of Culture, emphasized that the planning process involved collaboration between the municipal government, technical specialists, and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). The goal is to balance modernization and infrastructure needs with the preservation of the city's cultural identity and historical assets.
