Chihuahua state sees uneven rains while reservoirs remain far below capacity

Heavy rainfall this season has been concentrated in the Sierra region of Chihuahua, with municipalities such as Guadalupe, Calvo, Guachochi and Batopilas recording the highest accumulations. In contrast, towns in the central‑south and southeast, including Camargo, Manuel Benavides and Jiménez, have experienced a significant deficit, affecting agricultural and livestock water needs.

State Civil Protection reported that total reservoir storage across the state amounts to 1,181.3 million cubic metres, only 28.98% of overall capacity. The main dam, La Boquilla, holds 22.75% of its capacity, while others range from 13.19% at Abraham González to about 65% at El Tintero. Officials say the recent rains have helped but the recovery of water levels remains gradual, and continued precipitation will be crucial for improving storage and alleviating the prolonged drought conditions.

The civil protection agency will keep monitoring weather patterns, especially in the mountainous zones, as forecasts suggest further rain may arrive in the coming days.
