Mexico heatwave, monsoon rains and rising impacts
Overview
Mexico’s National Coordination of Civil Protection (CNPC) continues to monitor an intense summer heatwave that overlaps an expanding monsoon and two tropical systems in the eastern Pacific. The monsoon is projected to deliver heavy to very heavy rain from July 20‑23 across a broad band that now includes Sonora, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Durango, Baja California Sur and many central states, with 75‑150 mm expected in the northwest.
The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional warned of more than 40 hours of strong to very strong rains, possible hail, thunderstorms and gusts of 45‑50 km/h affecting Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas and the northwest. Simultaneously, record temperatures surged: Mexicali reached 48 °C, and other cities reported sensations of 45‑50 °C. State civil‑protection agencies activated hydration operatives, water stations and shelters.
Heavy‑rain warnings and landslide alerts were issued nationwide on 23 July, urging people to avoid flooded areas, watch for ground instability and evacuate when instructed. The Yucatán Peninsula and northern states face continued intense rain, strong winds and temperatures of 36‑40 °C, with humidity driving higher heat‑index values.
Heat‑related fatalities have risen sharply: Baja California recorded 12 deaths (10 heat‑stroke, 2 dehydration) by 22 July, while Quintana Roo, Yucatán and Campeche added five more. National totals stand at 49 heat‑related deaths, 78 heat‑stroke cases and 27 dehydration cases, reinforcing public‑health advisories to stay hydrated, limit sun exposure and protect vulnerable groups.
