Mexico weather emergency: flooding and storms intensify
Overview
By September 9, 2026, Mexico’s weather emergency continued as the Mexican monsoon and tropical waves triggered intense rainfall across several states, including Sonora, Sinaloa, and Nayarit.
In the Pacific Ocean, Tropical Depression Fourteen-E has formed. Although it is currently moving away from the coast and poses no direct threat, meteorologists expect it to intensify into a tropical storm and potentially a Category 1 hurricane.
This ongoing weather instability follows earlier reports of extreme conditions in the Yucatán Peninsula, where Tropical Wave No. 37 caused flooding and power outages in Mérida, and in the northwest, where monsoon rains impacted Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa, and Chihuahua.
