Chiikawa animated film to release in South Korea

The first feature-length animated film for the popular character Chiikawa, titled ‘Chiikawa Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island’, is set to release in South Korea on the 30th. The film was a massive success in Japan upon its July release, earning over 16.52 billion yen and attracting more than 11 million viewers, making it the highest-grossing film in Japan this year.

Based on the ‘Siren Arc’ from the original manga by illustrator Nagano, the story follows Chiikawa and friends as they are drawn to a mysterious island for high-paying work, only to become entangled in incidents involving a being known as a ‘Siren’. While the characters appear cute, the narrative explores darker themes of guilt, selfishness, and survival.

The franchise has gained significant popularity across Japan, South Korea, and China. Analysts suggest the characters' struggles with employment instability and social pressures resonate with young people, acting as a ‘digital painkiller’. The film will be available in both subtitled and dubbed versions.
