Chiikawa film surpasses 10 billion yen in box office revenue

The animated film ‘Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island’ has achieved significant commercial success, with box office earnings exceeding 10 billion yen. The film is based on the ‘Island Arc’ from the manga series by creator Nagano.

Animation studio Saipiku recently released new promotional illustrations featuring characters such as the Siren and Mermaids wearing traditional island attire, including flower crowns and waistcloths. This release comes as the film continues its theatrical run.

Industry analysis suggests the franchise's success stems from Nagano’s unconventional storytelling approach. Unlike traditional commercial methods that prioritize simplicity, the series utilizes complex references—including parodies of history, literature like Homer’s ‘Odyssey’, and various media—relying on the audience's intelligence and imagination.
